An xG race chart plots each team's running total of expected goals minute by minute across a match, so the two lines show who created more chances and when.
Why it matters. It shows the shape of a match's chance creation over time, not just the final scoreline, which is what separates a deserved result from a stolen one.
How the chart is built
Each team gets one line, and both start at zero. Every time that team takes a shot, its line steps up by that shot's expected goals value. The line never falls, because a total of accumulated chance quality cannot go backwards.
- Step size equals shot quality. A tap-in from close range produces a tall step. A speculative effort from thirty yards barely moves the line.
- Goals are marked directly on the line, labelled with the scorer's name and the minute, so a reader can see exactly where in the chance creation story each goal landed.
- A half-time reference line splits the chart at the 45th minute, making it easy to compare first-half and second-half output at a glance.
- Hovering a point breaks that step back down into the individual shots taken in that minute, each with its own xG value.

A sharp jump in a short spell. A cluster of steps arriving inside two or three minutes, rather than spread across ninety, is the visual signature of a purple patch. A team suddenly creates several good chances in quick succession before the pattern settles back down.
The eventual winner sitting below for most of the match. One line stays lower for long stretches, then a small number of steps late on are enough to win. That is the chart's version of a team being second best for most of the game and scoring when it mattered.
The shape matters as much as the total
Two matches can finish with identical final xG totals for both teams and tell completely different stories, because the total alone throws away when the chances arrived.
A slow, steady climb describes control. Regular small steps across the full ninety minutes is a team dictating the game and creating a stream of moderate chances rather than depending on one moment.
A late spike describes a chaotic finish, not sustained pressure. A team level for eighty minutes whose line jumps twice in stoppage time was not dominant for most of the match, it just got there in the end. Reading only the final number hides that difference completely.
Two misreadings to drop
"Winning the xG race means deserving the win." It means creating better chances over the match, which is a real and useful signal, but it is not a moral verdict on the result. A team can create the better chances and still lose fairly to a smaller number of clinically taken ones.
"One huge step in the line proves sustained dominance." A single penalty or a clear one-on-one can jump a line as much as ten ordinary shots combined. Check the shape of the climb, not just where the line ends up, before deciding which team controlled the match.
"A flat line for long spells means nothing happened." It means neither team had a shot, which is not the same as neither team threatening. Build up play, final-third pressure and blocked crosses never touch the line at all, since only a shot moves it.
